… forms part of the ongoing Design & Build process for the Kyaninga Child Development Centre in Fort Portal, Uganda. The project develops the first buildings of an inclusive school within KCDC’s growing Centre of Excellence and combines research, design, technical development and construction on site. Under the principle of “Appropriate Approaches”, the work responds to the local climate, available materials, construction knowledge and social context, favouring simple and resource-conscious building methods that can be realised together with local craftspeople and students from Uganda and Germany. The direct transition from drawing and detailing to construction at a 1:1 scale makes the building process itself part of the architectural design and an exchange of knowledge between everyone involved.
